Nile Basin Initiative
The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a partnership initiated and led by the riparian states of the Nile River. The NBI seeks to develop the river in a cooperative manner, share substantial socioeconomic benefits, and promote regional peace and security.
Primary objectives of the NBI:
To develop the Nile Basin water resources in a sustainable and equitable way, to ensure prosperity, security, and peace for all its peoples, To ensure efficient water management and the optimal use of the resources, To ensure cooperation and joint action between the riparian countries, seeking win-win gains, To target poverty eradication and promote economic integration, To ensure that the program results in a move from planning to action. Conserving Water through the Irrigation Association
Founded in 1949, the Irrigation Association (IA) is a leading membership organization for irrigation equipment and system manufacturers, dealers, distributors, designers, consultants, contractors and end users. The organization is dedicated to promoting efficient irrigation to its members and the irrigation industry through continuing education and educating the public on sound practices and water management, serving as a centralized clearing house for research and innovation and lending expertise to water-use public policy at the local, state, regional and national level to name a few. Green Hotels Association’s purpose is to bring together hotels interested in environmental issues. From water-saving equipment and techniques such as low-flow shower heads, serving water on request only in restaurants to low-flow toilets, the mission is to promote reduction of water usage. Reclamation’s desalination & water purification research
Reclamation is a contemporary water management agency with strategic plans outlining numerous programs, initiatives, and acitivities that meet new water needs and balance the multitude of competing uses of water in the West. The Agency’s mission is to assist in meeting the increasing water demands of the West while protecting the environment and the public’s investment in these structures. They place great emphasis on fulfilling water delivery obligations, water conservation, water recycling and reuse, and developing partnerships as well as finding ways to bring together the variety of interests to address the competing needs for the limited water resources.
Reclamation awarded over $1.7 million for 16 desalination research and cooperative agreements. Including matching contributions, the total investment in desalination research amounted to over $6 million. Published reports may be downloaded at their site LINK: Reclamation

Formed in 2002, The African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) primary focus is to promote cooperation, security, social and economic development and poverty eradication among member states through the management of water resources and provision of water supply services. The Mission of AMCOW is to provide political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources for sustainable social and economic development and maintenance of African ecosystems.
